Government Clears Stadium Project
Cricket fans in Kakinada have reason to celebrate. The Andhra Pradesh government has formally approved the construction of a full-fledged cricket stadium in the city. This decision ends a long period of anticipation and sets the stage for a major upgrade in local sports infrastructure.
Strategic Land Allotment
The stadium will be built on a 16.55-acre plot of endowment land at Sarpavaram village in Kakinada Rural Mandal. This land belongs to the Sri Bhavanarayana Swamy Devasthanam and has been leased to the District Collector and Magistrate for a 33-year period. The lease rate has been fixed at ₹50,000 per acre per year, with periodic increases every three years according to government norms.
Boost for Regional Cricket
Approval came after detailed proposals submitted by local authorities and recommendations from the Commissioner of Endowments. The decision follows the success of other stadiums in Andhra Pradesh, such as the Anantapur cricket ground, which has hosted Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments, showing the organisational capacity of the Andhra Cricket Association.
Economic and Social Impact
Local officials believe the stadium will do more than host matches. It is expected to create jobs, encourage youth participation in sports and boost Kakinada’s profile on the state’s sporting map. Analysts say improved infrastructure often leads to greater investment in training facilities and attracts tournaments that drive tourism and commerce.
Next Steps and Expectations
Officials have been directed to ensure timely lease payments and complete all procedural requirements to prevent project delays. Once built, the stadium could host district and state-level matches and serve as a venue for cricket training programmes.
